Automated strategies interact with broker infrastructure hundreds or thousands of times more often than a manual trader does, so broker quality compounds. A half-pip of extra spread is invisible on one trade and decisive across a thousand. Choosing a broker is therefore not an administrative step after choosing a strategy — it is part of strategy selection itself.
Regulation is the first filter
Regulated brokers — overseen by bodies such as ASIC (Australia), the FCA (United Kingdom), CySEC (Cyprus/EU), or the CFTC/NFA (United States) — must segregate client funds, meet capital requirements, and answer to someone when things go wrong. Offshore brokers may offer higher leverage and looser rules, and in exchange you hold counterparty risk that no strategy can hedge: if the broker fails or simply refuses a withdrawal, your equity curve is irrelevant.
Verify regulation on the regulator's own register, not the broker's website. This takes five minutes and filters out most of the industry's bad actors.
What to compare, in order
- Total round-trip cost on YOUR instrument: spread plus commission, measured during the sessions your strategy trades — not the marketing page's "from 0.0 pips."
- Execution model and speed: ECN/STP-style execution with low latency suits automation; frequent requotes or slow fills quietly rewrite a strategy's statistics.
- MT5 support, and whether algorithmic trading and EAs are permitted without restriction on the account type you plan to use.
- Swap rates if your strategy holds positions overnight — for multi-day strategies swaps can exceed spreads in importance.
- Deposit and withdrawal friction: methods, fees, and real-world processing times. Search for withdrawal complaints specifically.
- Server time zone (lesson two) and whether the broker offers a VPS or low-latency hosting.
Test the pair, not the parts
The correct final step is empirical: run your strategy on a demo account at your shortlisted broker, with the exact account type you intend to fund, and compare its behavior against your backtest and against demos at other brokers. Same EA, same settings, same weeks — the differences you observe are the broker's contribution to your results.
This costs nothing but time, and it converts broker choice from a leap of faith into a measured decision.
